Mexico participates in the third round of peace talks between the Government of Colombia and ELN
  • Mexico welcomes the agreements reached in the third round of peace negotiations between the Government of the Republic of Colombia and the National Liberation Army (ELN).

The third round of negotiations in the peace talks between the Government of the Republic of Colombia and the National Liberation Army (ELN), which were held from May 2-June 9 in Havana, Cuba, came to a close today.

Mexico congratulates the delegations of the Government of Colombia and the National Liberation Army for having reached agreements on the two main issues of this cycle: a bilateral, national and temporary ceasefire, and the participation of Colombian society in the peace process. In addition, Mexico acknowledges the presence of Colombian President Gustavo Petro and Commander Antonio García, head of the ELN, at the closing ceremony. This reaffirms the desire and commitment of the parties to continue moving forward towards the long-awaited and shared vision of peace for Colombia.

The agreements reached in this cycle correspond to points 1 and 5 of the "Mexico Agreement," which established the definitive agenda and roadmap for the negotiations and was signed in our country on March 10, 2023, as a result of the second round of negotiations.

Mexico, as guarantor, applauds the work carried out jointly with the other guarantor countries: Brazil, Chile, Cuba, Norway and Venezuela, and thanks the Cuban Government and people for their hospitality in hosting the third round of talks, which reconfirms Cuba's commitment and support for peace processes in the region.

Mexico also recognizes the role of the Episcopal Conference of Colombia and the United Nations Verification Mission in Colombia (UNVIC) as permanent accompaniers, as well as that of the countries that make up the Accompaniment, Support and Cooperation Group: Germany, Spain, Sweden and Switzerland.

The two Mexican Foreign Service officials appointed by Mexico to act as guarantors of the process, with the accompaniment and support of the Embassy of Mexico in Cuba, closely followed the plenary sessions and the subcommittees of the peace talks, and fulfilled the commitment made by the Mexican State to act as depositary and witness of the agreements.

Mexico will continue to support this important peace process and will participate in the next round of negotiations and other related activities, with the goal of helping to achieve peace and development with social justice for the people of Colombia.
