Council proposes change to bulky waste collection service

The report, set to be reviewed at an Executive meeting later this month (23 January) recommends replacing the current one free annual bulky uplift with a 50% discount model for those receiving Council Tax Reduction benefits.

The proposed change aims to align the bulky waste service with the Council's existing garden waste discount to ensure a consistent approach while also addressing an annual service deficit of £85,000. Residents who qualify for the discount will continue to benefit from reduced costs of one discounted bulky uplift collection per year.

Falkirk Council remains one of only five Scottish local authorities offering a discounted bulky uplift service. Measures to mitigate potential risks, such as fly-tipping, include enhanced monitoring, awareness campaigns, and promoting free disposal options at Household Waste Recycling Centres (HWRCs).

Douglas Gardiner, Head of Environment and Operations said: "This proposal seeks to balance financial sustainability with the need to support vulnerable residents. By aligning the bulky uplift service with other discount schemes, we ensure fairness while addressing budgetary pressures."
