Boulder Begins Extensive Citywide Pothole Patching on Arterial Roads

The City of Boulder has kicked off an extensive citywide project to repair potholes on arterial roads within the next three to six weeks. Travelers can expect periodic delays and temporary single lane closures in some areas near pothole patching. Work will take place primarily during daytime hours from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m. with some nighttime exceptions for intersection or ramp work.

While city staff repair potholes year round, current road conditions following last winter necessitate additional large-scale patching efforts. Pothole patching will also impact roads owned by the Colorado Department of Transportation (CDOT) that are maintained by the city through an inter-governmental agreement with CDOT. This includes 28th Street, Foothills Parkway and Arapahoe Avenue. CDOT-owned Canyon Boulevard is not part of this project and will be maintained as part of future work. The city conducted similar efforts in 2023 due to adverse winter conditions on roadways. Boulder experiences frequent freeze and thaw cycles, where water enters cracks or small holes in the pavement and expands as it freezes, creating voids. When vehicles drive over these voids the pavement compresses, breaking the pavement and creating a pothole. As winter turns to spring with more frequent freeze-thaw cycles, potholes become more prominent, sometimes necessitating large-scale pothole repair.
