Youth to take active role in shaping Karratha’s future

Young people in Karratha will now have an active role in shaping the future of their City and providing their voice to Council.

The Youth Advisory Group was established in 2020, as a platform for young people's perspectives and ideas to be incorporated into Council decisions that may impact them.

The members are aged between 11 and 18 years and represent various towns within the City area.

In consultation with the YAG, Council has revised the terms of reference for the group, with the meetings to now be chaired by a young person, while City staff will attend to act as observers and support only.

Council will appoint up to three elected members to attend the YAG as observers.

City of Karratha Mayor Daniel Scott said he was excited to see young people take an active role in the community.
"These new terms of reference will provide the young people in Karratha with more autonomy and allow them to develop and grow into leaders within their community," Cr Scott said.

"We developed the new terms in consultation with the Youth Advisory Group who were wanting to take charge of the meetings and ensure their voices were heard.

"I'm looking forward to seeing how the members of the Youth Advisory Group continue to grow and develop into our next generation of leaders."
