All the facts on the 160th Ruhr derby

Schalke 04 and Borussia Dortmund are set for their 100th clash in the Bundesliga and their 160th meeting in a competitive match on Saturday.

Facts on the derby

  • Borussia have won the last four clashes by a combined 12-0 scoreline. BVB only put together a longer winning streak in the 1960s, winning eight derbies in a row between January 1964 and November 1967.
  • Historically, the Black & Yellows have the edge over the Royal Blues in the Bundesliga, with 37 wins and 32 defeats. However, there have been more losses (15) than victories (13) this century. There have also been 16 draws since then.
  • That said, only two of the last 14 meetings have ended in defeat (most recently in April 2019).
  • The derby has ended 0-0 11 times - no Bundesliga pairing has produced more goalless stalemates.
  • BVB have kept a clean sheet in each of the last five match-ups (0-0, 4-0, 3-0, 4-0, 1-0) - it is the longest run without conceding in the history of the derby.
  • Mats Hummels stands alongside Michael Zorc as the player with the most derby victories. Both have played a part in 10 wins in this fixture.
  • Klaus Fichtel (for Schalke 04) and Roman Weidenfeller (for BVB) have made the most derby appearances (21 each).

Royal Blues facts

  • Schalke are unbeaten in six rounds of matches. Their last defeat was a 6-1 loss to Leipzig on 24 January.
  • The Royal Blues, who are second-bottom, have won two consecutive matches for the first time this season over the last two weekends (against Stuttgart and Bochum) and now have four victories in total - no team has won fewer games.
  • Only Cologne have had more goalless draws (nine) than Schalke (seven).
  • Only Hoffenheim have suffered more home defeats (seven) than Schalke (six).

Black & Yellow facts

  • Borussia Dortmund have won their last eight league games, equalling the club record in the process.
  • Their tally of 16 wins this season is not matched by any other club.
  • No teams has won more games on the road than BVB (seven away wins including the last four in a row).
