Tourism Statistics, Quarter I: January-March, 2024


Revision for tourism income and tourism expenditure is completed
With the 2024 revision, which is a continuation of the revision carried out in 2022 for Tourism Statistics, the data on same-day visitors received from the General Directorate of Security started to be used, calculations were made according to the type of border gate (water, rail, air, road) the visitors used, and the sampling design was updated. As a result, the revisions planned for tourism income and expenditure have been completed, and the revision has been implemented from 2012 to 2023.

Tourism income increased by 5.4%
In the first quarter which is January, February and March of 2024 tourism income increased by 5.4% and reached to 8 billion 784 million 800 thousand dollars. 21% of tourism income was obtained from Turkish citizens resident abroad.

Visitors organise their travel individually or with package tour. While individual expenditures constituted 7 billion 775 million 627 thousand dollars of the total tourism income, 1 billion 9 million 174 thousand dollars of tourism income was obtained by package tour expenditures.

Number of departing visitors increased by 10.1%
In this quarter, number of departing visitors increased by 10.1% compared to same quarter of previous year and reached to 9 million 10 thousand 90 persons. 21.6% of the visitors was Turkish citizens resident abroad with 1 million 942 thousand 94 people.

In this quarter, the average expenditure per night of visitors departing from our country was 93 dollars. The average expenditure per night of Turkish citizens resident abroad was 64 dollars.

When the distribution of expenditure types in total tourism income are analyzed in this quarter, it is seen that the expenditure types which have the highest shares were food and beverage expenditures with 22.6%, international transport expenditures with 16.7% and package tour expenditures with 11.5%. In this quarter compared to the same quarter of the previous year; food and beverage expenditure increased by 2.8%, international transport expenditure increased by 11.8% and package tour expenditure increased by 19.4%.

In this quarter, visitors visited Türkiye mostly for "travel, entertainment, sportive and cultural activities" with 46%

The secondary purpose of visit was "visiting relatives and friends" with 31.3% and the third was "shopping" with 9.6%. Turkish citizens resident abroad visited mostly for "visiting relatives and friends" with 73.6%.

Tourism expenditure increased by 11.3%
Tourism expenditure which is the expenditure of the Turkish citizens resident in Türkiye and visited abroad, increased by 11.3% compared to same quarter of previous year and reached to 1 billion 779 million 649 thousand dollars. While 1 billion 444 million 620 thousand dollars of total expenditures was individual expenditures, 335 million 30 thousand dollars of tourism expenditures was package tour expenditures.

Number of Turkish citizens visited abroad increased by 18.4%
In this quarter number of Turkish citizens visited abroad increased by 18.4% compared to same quarter of previous year and reached to 2 million 449 thousand 225 persons. Average expenditure was 727 dollars per capita.
