The new member at Hollingbury Park Tennis Club in Brighton marked her arrival with a £250 donation to the local club via her employer UK Power Networks' Team Sport Award.

The funds will be put towards the cost of new balls and other essentials for the club.

Nicola, an operational safety engineer for the firm, said: "The club is community focused and want to keep the sport available to all levels of ability. It felt great to reward a community tennis club with a community award so I was really pleased to be able to do this for them."

She joined the club in April, spurred on by her neighbours, who joined last year.

Nicola said: "I always enjoyed watching tennis then started playing when I was 16, but apart from playing with the kids I hadn't played for about 20 years. It's lovely to be back and they are a friendly bunch of people.

"Nothing brings the community together in the way that sport does. It's the difference between a community and a collection of houses where people live. It's a great way to make friends and support others, it makes a huge difference to the community."

Hollingbury Park Tennis Club welcomes new members and is hosting an open day on 25 September and will include free coaching sessions for all ages and abilities. The Team Sport Award scheme is run by UK Power Networks to encourage staff to volunteer in the community and is aimed at promoting healthy living, teamwork and developing sports opportunities. In 2020, more than 60 local sports teams connected to UK Power Networks' staff benefited from a share in £15,500.
