Shaping the Future for Hillsboro & His Family

After completing a paid, 10-day semiconductor technician training program at Portland Community College (PCC), Jean Tupa successfully launched a new career as a maintenance technician at Intel.

Previously employed in the restaurant industry, Jean welcomed the opportunity to learn new skills and make new friends. Now that his new job offers more stability and a compressed work week, Jean is able to spend more time with his two nephews, making memories and helping to shape their future.

What led you to a career in advanced manufacturing?

I had been working as a line cook in the restaurant industry for nearly eight years. I was feeling a bit burned out and was looking for something new. A friend told me about the Quick Start program at Portland Community College, so I took the quiz and was quickly accepted into the program.

Knowing it was a paid 10-day training program - and that I was guaranteed an interview with Intel after I completed it - it felt like a great opportunity.

How did the Quick Start program prepare you for your job at Intel?

The Quick Start training gave me a basic idea of what we would be doing on the job if I was hired. We learned about the machines we'd be maintaining, how to troubleshoot problems, the tools we'd be using, and how to fix the equipment. They also taught us a lot about safety, which was important to me.

What has been the most exciting part of your job?

First, I am very proud to be part of a multibillion-dollar company that is helping to create technology of the future. It is really exciting to be working with machines that are used to make parts for the next generation of computers and cellphones.

It is pretty cool to know I've had a hand in shaping the technology people will be using in a couple of years! Also, I really like working with my team. I have met such fantastic people. Everyone is friendly and welcoming. It has been a win-win!

What would you tell a friend who might be interested in a similar job in advanced manufacturing?

I would tell them to go for the opportunity to learn something new.

Once you have completed the training, you have the opportunity to work for a great company with a lot of room to grow in your job. Intel really cares about their employees - both from a safety perspective, as well as their future. They offer tuition reimbursement if you want to go back to college and get more certification or even a degree in engineering.

How has your life changed since getting your job?

My days are much less stressful now. I love the compressed work week Intel offers - three days on, four days off one week, and then four days on and three days off the next. This has allowed me to spend more time with my nephews and other family members, which is so important to me. I've also met so many new people and have made new friends, which has been a really nice surprise.

Do you see yourself growing into other roles at Intel?

For now, I am focusing on what I can learn to be useful for my team. But I have so many more opportunities now.
