Scholar’s dedication to all Australians awarded Muslim Professional of the Year

The scholarly contribution of a Charles Sturt University Islamic researcher has been recognised at an annual national awards ceremony celebrating the achievements of Australian Muslims working in different fields.

The scholarly contribution of a Charles Sturt University Islamic researcher has been recognised at an annual national awards ceremony celebrating the achievements of Australian Muslims working in different fields.

Adjunct Research Fellow Dr Dzavid Haveric in the Charles Sturt Centre for Islamic Studies and Civilisation was awarded Australian Muslim Professional of the Year (2023) at the 16th Annual Australian Muslim Achievement Awards (AMAA) in Melbourne this month.

The awards recognise and celebrate the range of work by Muslims of different ethnic backgrounds and various Australian Muslim organisations across the nation.

Dr Haveric (pictured above, centre with award recipients, and below) was acknowledged for his sustained scholarship over several decades.

The award citation noted, 'Dr Haveric's expertise in the history of Islam in Australia and his dedication to writing books on Islam and Muslim achievements are commendable.

'With thirteen books to his name, including groundbreaking works on Islamic civilisation and the Muslim discovery of the world, Dr Haveric has made significant contributions to the field. Despite facing health challenges, he continues to research, write and educate others about Islam. His passion and commitment make him a deserving recipient of this award'.

A recent example is Dr Haveric's research into the enlistment of Australian Muslims in the Australian Defence Force during World War I and World War II.

Accepting the award, Dr Haveric acknowledged the many successful Muslim professionals, especially those who travelled from many parts of Australia to attend the ceremony.

"I am very honoured to be chosen for the Australian Muslim Professional of the Year (2023), and I feel proud and humble," Dr Haveric said.

"I am glad to say that my three decades of research and writing, community engagement and contribution to universities, museums, libraries and ethnic groups, as well as the media, are broadly recognised.

"I dedicate my heart, spirit, knowledge and skills to all Australians, Muslim and non-Muslim."

Dr Haveric said he believed he will be able to produce more important books and research projects of national significance in the future.

"I will continue to contribute to this wonderful multicultural nation. Everything that is written in history should not last for a moment, but forever.

"I hope new generations will appreciate my legacy in recording Australia's Muslim history."

The awards are organised by the Mission of Hope as part of its commitment to foster excellence and highlight the positive impact of Australian Muslims across various fields of endeavour.
