Sandburg Middle School Investigation

On November 15, 2021 the Glendora Police Department learned of a threatening social media post involving students at Sandburg Middle School. Glendora Police Department detectives immediately began a full investigation into this incident, in which a juvenile was depicted holding what appeared to be an assault rifle and included disparaging references to other individuals. In the course of this investigation, the displayed assault rifle was confirmed to be an airsoft gun, and was seized as evidence on the same day the threat was brought to the attention of detectives. The investigation culminated in the suspects being held criminally liable for the threat (422.6(a) PC), and the case was presented to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office for criminal prosecution. The case was also reported to the Department of Justice as a Hate Crime, as is standard procedure with incidents of this nature. Only those suspected of, and charged with, a crime were investigated by the Glendora Police Department.

Cases involving juveniles are highly confidential, and the Glendora Police Department will not provide additional information relating to any pending case of criminal prosecution.

The Glendora Police Department understands both the immediate and long-term traumatic implications of hate crimes, and that understanding was instrumental in the Department's quick response. The Glendora Police Department will always safeguard our schools and treat all threats to the community at large with reverence and tenacity.

The City of Glendora has no tolerance for actions that involve racism or hate speech, or that serve to marginalize members of our community. To the extent allowed by the law, the women and men of the Glendora Police Department will always hold these individuals responsible.

Any inquiries related to the criminal proceedings of those involved can be directed to the Los Angeles County District Attorney's Office at (213) 974-3512 or [email protected] or its Media Relations Division at (213) 257-2000.

Inquiries as to the policies of the Glendora Unified School District should be directed to Dr. Virginia Kelsen of the Glendora Unified School District at (626) 963-1611 ext. 1201.
