Capito Announces Resources for Public Health, Economic Development, Infrastructure, and Education in West Virginia

WASHINGTON, D.C. - Today, U.S. Senator Shelley Moore Capito (R-W.Va.), a member of the Senate Appropriations Committee, announced funding from the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS), the U.S. Department of Agriculture (USDA), as well as the Appalachian Regional Commission (ARC) and National Endowment for the Humanities (NEH), to support public health, economic development, infrastructure, and education programs in West Virginia.

HHS FUNDING: Senator Capito, Ranking Member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Labor, Health and Human Services, Education, and Related Agencies (Labor-HHS), announced resources from HHS to support Head Start projects, health center clusters, and disease prevention in West Virginia.

"I am proud to secure resources that will help children have as many opportunities possible to learn and be successful at an early age, as well as critical support to strengthen our local health centers as they provide quality health services to West Virginians. I am also glad that we are supporting programs that anticipate and prevent the outbreak of future diseases here in our state. As Ranking Member of the Senate Labor-HHS Appropriations Subcommittee, I will always advocate for tools that will support more opportunities and better care for West Virginians and their families," Ranking Member Capito said.

ARC FUNDING: Senator Capito, Ranking Member of the Senate Environment and Public Works (EPW) Committee, also secured grants from ARC that aim to help local organizations in Charleston, W.Va. and Hillsboro, W.Va. provide key resources to communities in West Virginia.

"As the Ranking Member of the EPW Committee, I help oversee and work closely with the Appalachian Regional Commission to identify and support local projects that are making a difference in our communities. The grants announced today will provide a boost to organizations on the ground helping to increase health care, education, and wellness opportunities for West Virginians," Ranking Member Capito said.

USDA FUNDING: Senator Capito announced a grant from the USDA's Rural Development Program to assist the City of Belington, W.Va.'s Sewer Department in purchasing a sewer vacuum truck so that the city can regularly clean its sewer system to increase the longevity of its use.

"Making sure our communities have the tools they need to ensure the proper efficiency and longevity of critical infrastructure like sewers is critically important. I am happy to have secured this grant to help Belington meet that need and better serve its residents," Senator Capito said.

NEH FUNDING: Senator Capito, a member of the Senate Appropriations Subcommittee on Interior, announced a grant from the NEH to help Arthurdale Heritage, Inc. improve the quality and variety of its publicly available education programs.

"West Virginia is a state rich with history and culture. Arthurdale is a great example of the history that is preserved in the Mountain State that I have been proud to support, and I'm glad to see NEH helping them expand and raise the standard of services they provide. I am excited for the future generations of West Virginians that will learn new skills and subjects there," Senator Capito said.

• $3,524,648 in HHS funding to the West Virginia Department of Health and Human Resources (WV DHHR) (Charleston, W.Va.) to support a Epidemiology and Laboratory Capacity (ELC) for Prevention and Control of Emerging Infectious Diseases project.

• $2,111,359 in HHS funding to MountainHeart Community Services, Inc. (Oceana, W.Va.) to support Head Start and Early Head Start projects.

• $1,530,211 in HHS funding to the Raleigh County Community Action Association, Inc. (Beckley, W.Va.) to support Head Start projects.

• $1,076,240 in HHS funding to PRIDE Community Services, Inc. (Logan, W.Va.) to support Head Start projects.

• $445,323 in HHS funding to Roane Family Health Care (Spencer, W.Va.) to support health center clusters.

Individual ARC award details listed below:

• $119,536 in ARC funding to West Virginia Health Right, Inc. (Charleston, W.Va.) to procure equipment and expand primary and specialty care.

• $25,000 in ARC funding to High Rocks Educational Corporation (Hillsboro, W.Va.) to help fund costs for the Marketing, Data, and Community Outreach Coordinator position.

• $25,000 in ARC funding to the Keep Your Faith Corporation Capacity Building Project (Charleston, W.Va.) to upgrade their financial management systems, electronic health record systems, and grant management software and to procure two consultants to help the organization sustainably grow.

USDA award details listed below:

• $50,000 USDA Rural Development Grant to the City of Belington, W.Va. to assist in the purchase of a vacuum truck. This will allow the city to conduct regular sewer cleaning, extending the lifespan of the entire system that serves over 800 residents in Barbour County. It will also allow for monitoring and evaluation of the sewer system to determine needed upgrades that have been held up due to the lack of a vacuum truck.

• $25,000 NEH Public Impact Projects at Smaller Organizations Grant to Arthurdale Heritage, Inc. (Arthurdale, W.Va.) to provide resources that aim to expand the scope, reach, and excellence of public programs.
