Virginia DRAM Day

By virtue of the authority vested by the Constitution of Virginia in the Governor of the Commonwealth of Virginia, there is hereby officially recognized:

Virginia DRAM Day

WHEREAS, the invention of dynamic random-access memory (DRAM) semiconductor technology has continued to playa pivotal role in driving innovation in the Commonwealth, and the United States, across sectors such as artificial intelligence, autonomous vehicles, healthcare, and more; and

WHEREAS, the rapid pace of technological advancements, fueled by the performance and reliability of DRAM chips, has revolutionized industries and transformed our daily lives; and

WHEREAS, the United States aims to increase U.S.-based DRAM production to 40% of all global output in the next decade to enhance U.S. economic and national security by rebuilding a highly complex but critical manufacturing sector; and

WHEREAS, Virginia is the destination of choice in the United States for DRAM manufacturing, and Manassas, Virginia is the sole domestic location currently manufacturing DRAM semiconductor chips; and

WHEREAS, the Commonwealth's advanced materials manufacturers employ over 22,000 Virginians and will employ over 1,000 more in semiconductor manufacturing by 2030; and

WHEREAS, the establishment of Virginia DRAM Day will memorialize the invention of DRAM semiconductor technology and the day the DRAM patent was granted on June 4, 1968; and

WHEREAS, Virginia DRAM Day will honor the inventor of DRAM, Dr. Robert Dennard, who passed away in 2024, and IBM whose invention changed computing, the world, and the course of history; and

WHEREAS, Virginia DRAM Day will recognize the importance of DRAM in technology and industry, celebrate DRAM's contributions as a catalyst to economic growth and societal progress, and promote education and research in memory technology; and

WHEREAS, from artificial intelligence to the Internet of Things, DRAM's versatility will continue to shape the digital landscape with Virginia as a center of innovation;

NOW, THEREFORE, I, Glenn Youngkin, do hereby recognize June 4, 2024, as VIRGINIA DRAM DAY in our COMMONWEALTH OF VIRGINIA, and I call this observance to the attention of all our citizens.
