Media Alert: Committee on Cooperative Governance to Engage Stakeholders on State of Makana Municipality

Parliament, Friday, 16 September 2022 - The Portfolio Committee on Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs today received briefings from the Eastern Cape Department of Cooperative Governance and Traditional Affairs, Provincial Treasury, Office of the Auditor General and the South African Local Government Association on the state of the Makana Local Municipality. The briefings were mainly on the interventions of the government departments to the municipality.

The committee is in the Eastern Cape on a three-day oversight visit to Makana Local Municipality to assess the state of the municipality and hear the plans that are in place to ensure that the municipality delivers services to the people.

The committee will tomorrow engage with Sara Baartman District Municipality and Makana Local Municipality on the state of Makana Local Municipality. It will also have engagements with stakeholders that include Uncedo Taxi Association, Unemployed Peoples Movement; South African Council of Churches; SGB Forum; Makana Legends, Makhanda Business Forum; Kagiso Trust; Makhanda Circle of Unity; Public Service and Accountability Monitor; Rhodes University; National Arts Festival and Grahamstown Foundation.
