Monthly Public Safety Tips

Public Safety Tuesday February 11, 2025

1. Winter Weather Safety

  • Stay aware of icy conditions on sidewalks, parking lots and steps-wear slip-resistant shoes.
  • Drive cautiously in wet or icy conditions, allowing extra stopping distance.
  • Dress in layers to prevent hypothermia and frostbite if working outdoors.
  • Use caution when using space heaters.

2. Fire Safety & Heating Precautions

  • Avoid using space heaters near flammable materials and never leave them unattended.
  • Test smoke and carbon monoxide detectors in homes and workplaces.
  • Ensure electrical cords are in good condition and not overloaded.
  • Conduct fire drills and simulate emergency evacuations.
  • Learn to properly use a fire extinguisher.

3. Heart Health Awareness (American Heart Month)

  • Encourage regular exercise, healthy eating and stress management.
  • Recognize signs of a heart attack or stroke-call 911 immediately if symptoms occur.
  • Learn CPR and how to use an AED (Automated External Defibrillator).
  • Take the GCSU Department of Public Safety Stop the Bleed course.

4. Workplace Safety & Ergonomics

  • Maintain proper posture when sitting at a desk to prevent back and neck strain.
  • Take breaks to stretch and rest your eyes when working at a computer for long periods.
  • Keep walkways clear to prevent tripping hazards.

5. Emergency Preparedness

  • Review emergency exit routes and assembly areas in case of fire or other incidents.
  • Keep a winter emergency kit in your car (blanket, flashlight, water and non-perishable food).
  • Ensure all employees are aware of first aid and emergency response protocols.

6. Valentine's Day

  • Don't forget to buy your significant other a gift.
  • Don't forget to get a card too.
  • Make reservations early to ensure getting one.
