The Genesis Invitational was the final opportunity for entry into this week's World Golf Championships-Workday Championship at The Concession. At its conclusion, the top 10 in the FedExCup and the top 50 in the Official World Golf Ranking qualified automatically.
With his victory at Riviera Country Club, Max Homa was the only golfer to qualify for the WGC, and he checked both boxes at 10th in the FedExCup and 38th in the OWGR. It'll mark his debut in this WGC. He's appeared twice in the WGC-FedEx St. Jude Invitational and failed to finish inside the top 50 in both starts.
Homa also climbs into the fields of the Masters, the PGA Championship and the WGC-FedEx St. Jude this season. In five career starts in the majors, his only cut made was a T64 at the 2019 PGA Championship at Bethpage.
While not reflected in Recent Additions, 'TPC' has been added beside 69 golfers below.
On Friday, membership was informed that the top 125 in the 2019-20 FedExCup are automatically eligible for THE PLAYERS Championship on March 11-14. This is a traditional exemption into the PGA TOUR's flagship event, but because of the shortened season due to the pandemic, it had been revised to exempt the top 125 in a special points list that included the entirety of the 2019-20 and extending through this week's WGC/Puerto Rico Open doubleheader. Instead, both exemptions are going to be rewarded, so the field at TPC Sawgrass will be historically larger than usual.
Most of the 69 were going to qualify via the special points list, anyway, but this advance notice gives all proper time to plan for what promises to be a busy Florida Swing. That, of course, is nothing new.
UPDATE (Feb. 23): The USGA has announced the qualifying criteria for the U.S. Open on June 17-20. As a result, 48 golfers now are officially exempt into the second U.S. Open of the 2020-21 season.
Most of the traditional criteria has been applied, but there are two notable changes:
1) There will not be a sectional qualifier in England. In its place is a three-event series that will be using Race to Dubai points to determine 10 spots;
2) The second Official World Golf Ranking (June 7) is a week earlier than usual due to COVID-19 protocol.
Details of the three-event series and all remaining qualifying criteria can be found beneath the alphabetical list of qualifiers.
NOTE: Golfers are omitted if they recently haven't competed in majors for which they are eligible (e.g. PGA Championship=David Toms; The Open Championship=Justin Leonard).
