Foreign Secretary Ebrard inaugurates the 34th Meeting of Mexican Ambassadors and Consuls
  • The diplomats will analyze the current global challenges and opportunities, in addition to Mexico's international agenda for the coming year.
  • The annual meeting will take place from January 9-15.
  • New embassies will be opened in Africa and Asia.
  • This year, there will be entrance exam for the diplomatic-consular and technical-administrative branches of the Mexican Foreign Service.

Foreign Secretary Marcelo Ebrard inaugurated the 34th Meeting of Ambassadors and Consuls (REC) in Mexico City today. The meeting is held annually to discuss the current state and future prospects of Mexico's political, economic, social and cultural spheres.

The REC, first held in 1989, is an opportunity to analyze the challenges and opportunities presented by the global environment, in addition to Mexico's international actions for the coming year. At the meeting, the Mexican Government's foreign policy guidelines are reviewed and its priorities and goals are established, with the aim of strengthening the country's voice and prestige in a constantly changing global context.

In his remarks, Foreign Secretary Ebrard highlighted the work done by Mexico's embassies, consulates, missions and liaison offices in 2022. He announced the opening of new embassies in Africa and Asia-a historical debt, given Mexico's desire to be a proactive actor in the concert of nations-and an entrance exam this year for the diplomatic-consular and technical-administrative branches of the Mexican Foreign Service (SEM).

He said that the Foreign Ministry did extraordinary work. "The Foreign Service, the Undersecretaries, and all of you, it must be said, [have done] extraordinary [work]. We must continue doing the work. It is a source of pride and this year we will continue the work, so my congratulations to all those who have participated in this enormous effort, many of whom are present here today."

On Wednesday January 11, Thursday January 12 and Friday January 13, officials from all of the ministries and agencies of the federal government will visit the Foreign Ministry to transmit the instructions of President Andrés Manuel López Obrador for their areas (domestic, fiscal, trade, tourism, cultural, environmental and social policy, among others) and to discuss ways to contribute to the well-being of the Mexican people.

Regional sessions will be held on Tuesday, January 10 and Sunday, January 15 to address topics specific to Latin America and the Caribbean, Europe, Africa, the Middle East, Central Asia and Asia-Pacific.

On Saturday, January 14, the diplomats and senior Foreign Ministry officials will visit the Felipe Angeles International Airport (AIFA).
