Tomsk Polytechnic University and Sharif University of Technology (Islamic Republic of Iran) have signed an agreement to implement a joint dual-degree master's program in oil and gas engineering. The program has already started at the Heriot-Watt Center of TPU. At the end of the program, students will be able to receive two degrees simultaneously.

Sharif University of Technology is currently the leading university in Iran in the field of physical sciences and engineering. It is ranked 334th in the prestigious QS World University Rankings 2024, 84th in the list of Asia's best universities, and 244th in QS World University Rankings by Subject 2023 in Engineering and Technology.

"There is a close partnership both in the sphere of education and in the sphere of interaction with large companies between Tomsk Polytechnic University and the Islamic Republic of Iran. Tomsk Polytechnic University has students from Iran, and some of the graduates of Sharif University of Technology are now working for us. TPU and Sharif University of Technology had previously signed a Memorandum of Understanding, and we are glad to see that our partnership has continued in a logical way. I am sure that the mutual interest in developing and strengthening academic and scientific cooperation will only grow," says Leonid Sukhikh, Acting Rector of Tomsk Polytechnic University.

Ten state-funded places will be allocated within the joint program. The program is available for students who have chosen the master's program Development and Operation of Oil and Gas Fields, offered by TPU Heriot-Watt Center. To get into the program they have to pass an interview.

"Classes for the first group of students of the Center have already begun. A guest lecturer from the partner university is here to teach classes. Both Sharif University and TPU are one of the world's leading universities in the field of oil and gas engineering, according to prestigious international ratings. Our teaching staff has great fundamental knowledge, and our researchers are the authors of lead scientific articles in the field of oil and gas. We have already published joint scientific articles, and one of our graduates defended his Ph.D. thesis at TPU last week. I am sure that combining our efforts will bring our cooperation to a new level," says Valery Rukavishnikov, Director of the TPU Heriot-Watt Center.

In the first year of the joint English-language program, students will receive intensive instruction in a face-to-face modular format and practice their skills in group and individual projects. The second year is devoted to immersive internship experiences. Students who successfully complete the program can earn two degrees simultaneously.
