President of the Republic Vahagn Khachaturyan received the delegation led by Jean-Luc Mélenchon, Chairman of the "France Unbowed" party of France.

Welcoming the guests, the President noted. "First of all, thank You for being with us today. For every Armenian, the Genocide and April 24 are special. And the attitude of France and the French people towards the Armenians who escaped the Genocide was unique in their desire to settle in France, as well as to become full citizens of France. We always feel that support. Also, in the last 30 years, we as a State appreciate that attitude.

The recognition of the Genocide has often been tried to turn into a topic of political speculation, but I think that the demand of all of us goes beyond this and is aimed at preventing such crimes.

Unfortunately, there is still a constant threat of genocide in the world today. We, as a state, are consistent in this matter and continue to show active initiatives and involvement on international platforms for the purpose of preventing genocides and crimes against humanity and protecting the rights of victims. In this regard, the activity of You, the French political forces and authorities is also appreciated, which I am sure will ultimately give results."

Extending thanks for the welcome, Jean-Luc Mélenchon said: "Mr. President, as You probably know, I am accompanied by Sébastien Delogu, a French deputy of Armenian descent, and our small delegation, and I want to inform You that we clearly understand what honor You are doing us by receiving us at a time when You are taking on the greatest responsibilities personally as well.

My presence in Armenia is a way to reaffirm the ancient history that exists in France and the attention to Armenia that has existed for a long time. Jean Jaurès, the founder of the socialist movement, at the end of the 19th century, that is, long before the Genocide, warned the French about the violence of the Ottoman sultans and said that if the French do not do anything at this time, the consequences will be much worse not only for the Armenians, but also for the French.

I would like my visit to Armenia, and in particular this unique moment when we are meeting, to serve as an opportunity for Armenia to appear in the center of attention of France and the European Union once again. In any case, at least those who appreciate my work, for whom my ideas are important, should realize that Armenia is important. Of course, this is a difficult mission for them, but I also think that this moment, the meeting you provided, your reception, will also make our work easier."

A wide range of issues related to regional and global developments were discussed during the meeting. Reference was made to the opportunities of further promotion of multilateral cooperation between France, the EU and Armenia.

During the conversation, both sides stressed the imperative to prevent conflicts both in the South Caucasus and outside the region and to solve problems only through peaceful negotiations and within the framework of fundamental norms of international law.

In his speech, the French politician highly appreciated the firm position and political courage of Armenia and its authorities aimed at establishing peace and good-neighborly relations with neighbors.
