The 5-Day Modular Workshop on Cyber Security officially kicked off today, the 22nd of May 2023, at IUIU Kampala Campus. The Workshop is organised by the Islamic University in Uganda, in partnership with the Africa Centre of Excellence (ACE) of Obafemi Awolowo University (OAU) in Nigeria. The workshop was officially opened by the Rector of IUIU, Professor Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda, represented by the Vice-Rector, Academic Affairs, Dr. Jamil Serwanga. In attendance at the opening ceremony were; the 7-Member delegation from Nigeria, IUIU staff, as well as some of the workshop trainees. The trainers' delegation was led by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor in charge of the Administration of OAU, Professor Daramola Olusanjo Matthew Abayomi; the Director of ACE, Professor Adesola Aderounmu; Professor Olajubu Emmanuel Ajayi & Dr. Akinyemi, from the Department of Computer Science and Engineering at OAU; Dr. Akinwale Abiodun, the Managing Director of Logictronic Systems Ltd in Nigeria; Mr. Efiong John Edet, and Miss Adejo Veronica Ikoojo. Others present at the ceremony were; Professor Salawu Rafiu, from the Department of Administration of IUIU; Dr. Umar Yahya, the Chairperson of the Organising Committee of this workshop; Dr. Chemisto Musa, the Head of the ICT Department, as well as several other IUIU staff from the Department of Computer Science and the Directorate of ICT Services. Dr. Hashim Ibrahim Bisallah, the Director of Research and Innovation at Kampala International University, was also in attendance at the opening ceremony.

In his remarks, the Vice-Rector of IUIU highlighted the great opportunity that lies in this workshop, way beyond the training to be conducted during these forthcoming 5days. "This workshop to me is a huge opportunity for all of us, especially the participating trainees as well as IUIU as the host University. I can only say that the sky is actually just the beginning because with this expanded network including the great OAU, we can only look forward to more collaboration opportunities", said Dr. Jamil Serwanga, the Vice Rector IUIU. On his part, Professor Daramola expressed the readiness of OAU to work with IUIU way beyond this workshop. "This workshop is just a gateway to our future broader partnership. The discussion has now officially started between our two Universities. I can assure you that we will do all that is possible within our means, to see to it that we realize longer-lasting collaboration and partnership through a mutually agreed upon memorandum of understanding. I thank the IUIU, for hosting us and according our ACE, the opportunity to conduct this training here", said the Deputy Vice Chancellor of OAU. This readiness to partner with IUIU on broader collaboration was also echoed by Prof. Aderounmu, the Director of ACE. "At ACE, Cyber Security is just one of our strength areas. We have built capacity in various areas including IoT, AI, and Intelligent Systems, among others. And this explains why we have earned the trust and confidence of the World Bank which has so far provided considerable funding to the ACE. I look forward to growing our partnership to broader levels, such that we can also welcome some of IUIU's students and staff to our ACE, to accomplish their research projects there", said Prof. Aderounmu.

The workshop is being attended by 118 participants from 25 Ugandan institutions, comprising 18 Universities, 4 research and development centers, as well as 3 software development companies. The workshop will cover several topics around the evolving area of Cyber Security, a core computing sub-field that is crucial to the success of the future digital workshop. The workshop is on until 26th May 2023.
