Death and Causes of Death Statistics, 2021


Number of deaths was 565 thousand 594 in 2021
While the number of deaths was 507 thousand 938 in 2020, it became 565 thousand 594 with an increase of 11.4% in 2021.

While 56.0% of deceased persons were males and 44.0% of them were females in 2020, 54.6% of deceased persons were males and 45.4% of them were females in 2021.
Crude death rate was 6.7 per thousand
While crude death rate which is the number of deaths per thousand persons were 6.1 per thousand in 2020, it was 6.7 per thousand in 2021.

The highest crude death rates were in Sinop and Kastamonu with 12.7 per thousand
The provinces having the highest crude death rates were Sinop and Kastamonu with 12.7 per thousand in 2021. These provinces were followed by Giresun and Edirne with 11.2 per thousand, Balıkesir and Çankırı with 11.1 per thousand, Çanakkale with 10.8 per thousand. The province having the lowest crude death rate was Şırnak with 2.8 per thousand. Şırnak was followed by Hakkari with 3.0 per thousand, Van with 3.7 per thousand and Şanlıurfa with 3.8 per thousand.

Among causes of death, diseases of the circulatory system took the first place
When the deaths were analyzed by causes, deaths from diseases of the circulatory system were the highest with 33.4% in 2021. This cause of death was followed by neoplasms with 14.0% and diseases of the respiratory system with 13.4%.

41.8% of deaths from diseases of the circulatory system were caused by ischaemic heart diseases
When the deaths from diseases of the circulatory system were analyzed, deaths from ischaemic heart diseases were 41.8%, deaths from other heart diseases were 23.3% and deaths from cerebrovascular diseases were 18.9%.

Proportion of deaths from diseases of the circulatory system was the highest in Afyonkarahisar
When the deaths from diseases of the circulatory system were analyzed by provinces, proportion of deaths from diseases of the circulatory system was the highest in Afyonkarahisar with 43.4% in 2021. This province was followed by Aydın with 43.1%, Çanakkale with 42.0%, Balıkesir with 40.2%. Proportion of deaths from diseases of the circulatory system was the lowest in Kayseri with 26.1%. This province was followed by İstanbul with 27.4%, Kocaeli with 27.6%, Muş and Eskişehir with 28.3%.

Neoplasm deaths was mostly from malignant neoplasms of larynx and trachea/bronchus/lung
When the deaths from malignant neoplasms were analyzed, deaths from malignant neoplasms of larynx and trachea/bronchus/lung were 29.7%, deaths from malignant neoplasms of lymph/haematopoietic tissue were 7.7%, deaths from malignant neoplasms of stomach and colon were 7.6%.

Proportion of deaths from neoplasms was the highest in Ankara with 17.8%
When the deaths from neoplasms were analyzed by provinces, proportion of deaths from neoplasms was the highest in Ankara with 17.8% in 2021. This province was followed by Kars with 17.2%, Tekirdağ with 17.1%, Iğdır with 17.0%. Proportion of deaths from neoplasms was the lowest in Kilis with 7.9%. This province was followed by Şanlıurfa with 8.7%, Siirt with 8.9%, Gaziantep with 9.0%.

The number of deaths from COVID-19 was 65 thousand 198
While the number of deaths from COVID-19 was 22 thousand 136 in 2020, it became 65 thousand 198 in 2021. Of those who died from COVID-19 in 2021, 35 thousand 693 were males and 29 thousand 505 were females.

When the number of deaths from COVID-19 were analyzed by age group, it was seen that the highest number of deaths from COVID-19 occurred in the 65-74 age group in 2020, and in the 75-84 age group in 2021. Of those who died from COVID-19 in the 75-84 age group in 2021, 9 thousand 493 were males and 8 thousand 566 were females.

Infant mortality rate was 9.2 per thousand
While the number of infant deaths was 9 thousand 657 in 2020, it was 9 thousand 938 in 2021. While infant mortality rate was 8.7 per thousand in 2020, it was 9.2 per thousand in 2021. In other words, the number of infant deaths was 9.2 per thousand live births in 2021.

Under five mortality rate was 11.2 per thousand
While the under five mortality rate which is the probability of dying during five years after birth was 10.6 per thousand in 2020, it was 11.2 per thousand in 2021.

EXPLANATIONS
Turkish Statistical Institute (TurkStat) has published death and causes of death statistics for the whole Türkiye by using death data in the Central Civil Registration System (MERNIS) database and cause of death data from the Death Notification System of the Ministry of Health since 2009.

Causes of death data are obtained by coding the underlying causes of death on the death notification forms of the Death Notification System in accordance with the International Classification of Diseases (ICD-10) of World Health Organization (WHO).
