Drake University Law School is set to host a distinguished leader in the legal profession as part of its 2024-2025 Dean's Speaker Series on leadership in the legal profession. The Honorable Carl E. Stewart, U.S. Fifth Circuit Court of Appeals, will engage in a fireside chat and Q&A session on Thursday, March 20, at 2:30 p.m. in Cartwright Hall on the Drake University campus in Des Moines. The conversation will be facilitated by Drake Law Dean Roscoe Jones, Jr.
Judge Stewart's legal career is marked by historic milestones and decades of dedicated service. Appointed to the Fifth Circuit in 1994 by President Bill Clinton, he made history in 2012 as the court's first African-American Chief Judge, serving until 2019. His impressive career spans roles in both the military and civilian legal sectors, including service in the U.S. Army JAG Corps, the Louisiana Attorney General's Office, the U.S. Attorney's Office, and the private sector. Before his federal appointment, he served as a Louisiana district judge and later on the Louisiana Second Circuit Court of Appeals.
A graduate of Dillard University (B.A., magna cum laude) and Loyola University New Orleans College of Law (J.D.), Judge Stewart is widely respected for his legal acumen, leadership, and commitment to justice.
The event is free and open to the public, though registration is requested.
