Itaú Unibanco launches first 100% digital card for its clients

The new card has no physical version and can be used in digital wallets for in-person purchases and with the virtual card for online transactions; the plastic-free card was co-created with customers and has zero annuity

September 23, 2022 - A pioneer in innovations in the Brazilian card market, Itaú Unibanco launches its first card with a 100% digital journey: the Itaú Click Digital Mastercard, which, in addition to the totally digitalized experience, without the presence of the physical card, has free annuity. The novelty is part of the bank's movement to offer consumers a complete and modern value proposition and is aligned with Itaú's ambition to lead a change in behavior in relation to means of payment, promoting an evolution in the use of plastic cards that are so common in the lives of Brazilians. The card is being tested initially by a restricted base of Itaú clients and employees; it is expected to be available for purchase by any client by the end of the year. The initiative is also in line with Itaú's objective of supporting its clients in the transition to a more sustainable economy and with the commitment made with the UN to zero carbon emissions from portfolios by 2050 (Net-Zero Banking Alliance). With this innovation, the more customers opt for this solution, less plastic will be generated, avoiding the use of a material that can take 200 to 600 years to completely decompose in nature. Click Digital can be used in face-to-face purchases at any establishment: just register the card in the digital wallets offered by Itaú (Apple Pay, Google Pay, and Samsung Pay) and make the payment by proximity, using the cell phone. In the case of online purchases, the customer must generate the virtual card - which may have a temporary number that changes with each purchase or a fixed number for recurring payments (ideal for use in sites and apps that require the registration of a payment method, such as subscriptions, delivery, and mobility). "With Click Digital, we are building a product of the future. We were the first bank in Brazil to have a mobile application, to offer the virtual card and to have all the digital wallets, building a very solid road in offering innovations that improve our clients' experience - always with the security that is Itaú's brand. This launch materializes for Brazilians a trend in the market and reinforces our pioneering spirit of making people's daily lives easier through new digital tools," explains Mario Miguel, Director of Cards at Itaú Unibanco.
