Washington, D.C. - On February 13, U.S. Senator John Thune (R-SD) and U.S. Representative Randy Feenstra (R-IA) introduced the Death Tax Repeal Act. SBE Council joined nearly 200 groups in asupport letter.
The U.S. House bill garnered 175 original cosponsors for introduction. Congressman Sanford Bishop (D-GA) is the Democrat co-lead of the legislation.
SBE Council President & CEO Karen Kerrigan issued the following statement of support in response to the bill's introduction and the importance of moving the legislation to President Trumps' desk for his signature:
"The dream of starting and growing a successful business extends to building a lasting enterprise that can prosper into the next generation, and beyond. Currently, that takes significant and ongoing investment and planning. Capital continuously siphoned for estate tax planning - that is, if a business owner has 'extra' resources on hand - undermine the competitiveness of the business and fuel uncertainty as tax law provisions continue to fluctuate. Quite often, the dream of succession never materializes given costs, lack of planning, or a death tax bill that makes it impossible to keep the business in the family. Repealing the death tax is long overdue. It will boost investment, innovation, job security, and economic health in local communities. It will save businesses and the American dream. SBE Council strongly supports the Death Tax Repeal Act."
