UM-Flint Student Government election gives students a voice on campus

Voting in the Student Government election allows students to help shape the University of Michigan-Flint. This election season, SG voting will begin at 8 a.m., March 27 and ends at 11:59 p.m., March 28, with voting occurring through CampusConnections.

Serving as the liaison between students and university administration, faculty and staff, SG members are the voice of its constituents. The SG president, vice president and council empower students through advocacy, policy change, and programming in the students' best interests, needs and welfare.

"Election season is a special time for student engagement on campus," said Lina Azeim, 2023-24 SG president. "It is not just a matter of voting, but rather an opportunity and right of every student to use their voice to elect those they believe will best serve them and their campus community. As this election season ends, I hope students are empowered to take advantage of that opportunity as they head to the polls."

The candidate for president is Logan LaPeen, current SG vice president and a junior in the social studies teacher's certificate program from Fenton.

"Serving as VP has allowed me to be a direct advocate for students to university administration and work toward sustaining and creating a campus that is full of life, traditions and community through bringing back the Kearsley Carnival and the Lock-in at the Library event this past fall semester," he said.

Abe Dabaja, a junior business administration marketing major from Grand Blanc, is the candidate for vice president. He's currently the SG director of marketing and communications.

Their administration's goal will be to focus on civic engagement, communication and the rejuvenation of the campus to ensure that all students' voices are heard and recognized.

Current SG Senators Samantha Jarbou, a first-year biology major from Clio, and Noor Ruzhan, a junior computer science major from Bangladesh, are running for reelection.

Jarbou's work as a senator had included networking with other first-generation students on campus and engaging commuter students. Ruzhan aims to ensure all SG meetings and work done around campus are highlighted through different modes of media and to work and collaborate with diverse, multicultural student organizations.
