City of Abilene Earns VETS Indexes 3 Star Employer Award

The City of Abilene proudly announces its recognition as a VETS Indexes 3 Star Employer in the 2024 VETS Indexes Employer Awards.

Abilene joins a distinguished group of organizations acknowledged for their exemplary efforts in veteran employment. The recognition reflects the city's dedication to fostering an inclusive workplace environment that values the contributions of veterans and military-affiliated individuals.

George Altman, president of VETS indexes, said the City's efforts to "hire, retrain, and support veterans and the militarily-connected community" earned the organization the award.

"Competition for the VETS Indexes Employer Awards was tougher than ever in 2024, as a record number of organizations participated," Altman said, the City distinguishing itself among a list of 344 employers in the running.

That list of hopefuls increased by more than 100 from last year and was nearly triple the number from two years ago. VETS Indexes recognized 285 organizations across four award levels.

VETS Indexes said in a news release that those who made the cut demonstrated a strong commitment to veterans, National Guard and Reserves members, and military spouses.

Participating organizations included large and small companies, government agencies and departments, nonprofit organizations, and colleges and universities.

Familiar names that won at the 3 Star level, the same as the City, include Adobe, Alliant Energy, Avian, bp America, CVS Health, Hyundai Motor America, S&P Global, Sony Electronics, Inc., U-Haul International, United Airlines, and Xerox.

The in-depth survey and recognition program analyzes employers' policies, practices, and outcomes in detail across the following five categories:

  • Veteran job candidate recruiting and hiring
  • Veteran employee development and retention
  • Veteran-inclusive policies and culture
  • Support for members of the National Guard and Reserves
  • Military spouse/family support
