Celebrate Salve Regina's Earth Week with variety of events and activities

Earth Day is celebrating its 54th anniversary on Monday, April 22. As the Earth is a critical concern of the Sisters of Mercy, the week-long celebration will kick off on Earth Day for a week of programming geared toward environmental stewardship and sustainability.

The schedule will be full, as community members from across campus will be providing programming with a keynote lecture, service opportunities, thrift-shopping and other activities.

Earth Week Events

Monday, April 22

Climate Solutions and Our Future: From Universities to Society
4 p.m. to 5:15 p.m., Bazarsky Lecture Hall in O'Hare Academic Building

Amid mounting evidence of the need to reduce emissions and respond to rapid climate change, institutions are grappling with financial and logistical constraints against the necessity to reshape their energy usage.

Join the McAuley Institute for Mercy Education for a keynote address with Stephen Porder, the associate provost for sustainability and professor at Brown University and author of "Elemental: How Five Elements Changed Earth's Past and Will Shape Our Future," to explore solutions as a community that are available to institutions today that create a path to reduced emissions.

Salve's COP28 delegates Levi Mitchell '24, Mohamad Omar Kaziz '25 and Dr. Jameson Chace - chair of the Department of Cultural, Environmental and Global Studies - will also be giving an address on their experiences amongst global climate leaders.

Plant a Seed
10 a.m. to 2 p.m., McKillop Library

Stop by the McKillop Library on Monday, April 22, and Wednesday, April 24, to plant flower or vegetable seeds of choice in a biodegradable container to take away.

Tuesday, April 23

Full Moon Meditation
7 p.m., lawn of McAuley Hall

Join Dr. Paula Martasian, chair of the Department of Psychology, for a transformative full moon meditation in celebration of Earth Week. The event will immerse attendees in a tranquil atmosphere of mindfulness and rejuvenation amidst Mother Nature. Attendees should dress warmly and bring something to sit on.

Wednesday, April 24

Arboretum Tour
Noon, tour begins on front lawn of Misto Gatehouse

Join Mike Chester, superintendent of grounds, Dr. Jameson Chace and students from the newly formed student-run organization TreeHawks, for a spring tour of Salve Regina's Level II Arboretum. Learn about Salve's rare exotic flora and get questions answered about the care and upkeep of trees. This educational and inspiring tour will begin at the Misto Gatehouse and will tour trees in the downtown campus area.

Sabbath Time: Doing Your Part to Care for the Earth

Join the Mercy Center for Spiritual Life for a special Sabbath Time for Earth Week.

Friday, April 26

Arbor Day Celebration

Pop-Up Thrift Shop
11 a.m. to 3 p.m., front lawn of McAuley Hall

Starting that spring cleaning? Looking to donate to a good cause? Hosted by the Student Government Association, the thrift shop emphasizes the sustainability efforts seen throughout Earth Week.

Field Day
Noon, front lawn of McAuley Hall/McAuley Hall

Field Day will welcome The ReFill, Empire Tea and Coffee, share information from Sodexo dietician's on plant-based diets, hold lawn games and have a recycling/composting station hosted by Sustainable Salve.

Arbor Day Tree Planting and Earth Champion Awards Ceremony
1 p.m., McAuley Circle

The day will include the annual Arbor Day Tree Planting, this year planting a Paperbark Maple behind the statue of Catherine McAuley. President Kelli J Armstrong will share a welcome and remarks, Sister Therese Antone will offer a blessing and there will also be reflections from Levi Mitchell '24 and Hannah Maguire '27.

Following the tree planting, Salve will be honoring the 2024 recipients of the 3rd annual Earth Champion Award.

Enchanted Garden Ball
7 p.m. to 9 p.m., Young Building

Join the Center for Community Service and Engagement as they team up with Student Engagement for the inaugural Enchanted Garden Ball! A donation of clean/unused socks and underwear is the entrance fee and attire is formal. In the spirit of sustainability, students are encouraged to wear formal attire from past formal events.
