Slovenia conducted the INEX-6 international exercise

The international exercise INEX-6, prepared by the Organisation for Economic Co-operation and Development, Nuclear Energy Agency (OECD NEA), was completed at the Slovenian Nuclear Safety Administration (SNSA).

The INEX-6 international exercise, is already the sixth exercise organized by the OECD NEA, which is extremely important for strengthening expertise and sharing experience at the international level. The same exercise scenario was conducted in all member states. The interpretation of exercise conclusions will enable a comparison of existing regulations in member states, the identification of common challenges and the exchange of good practices. In Slovenia, the exercise was organized and led by the SNSA.

The exercise included a complex scenario dealing with recovery period from a nuclear or radiological accident, foreseen protective actions in the national and local level and in other responsible organisations and institutions one year after the accident.

The exercise took place in March at the URSJV in the form of four table-top exercises, where we discussed about four aspects: Health Impacts, Food Safety, Remediation and Decontamination, and Radioactive Waste Management. About 60 participants from the following organizations took part in the exercise, both from the national and local level:

  • Agency for Radioactive Waste Management,
  • "Jožef Stefan" Institute, Ecological Laboratory with a Mobile Unit,
  • Ministry of Finance,
  • Ministry of Infrastructure,
  • Ministry of Natural Resources and Spatial Planning,
  • Ministry of the Environment, Climate and Energy,
  • Ministry of Health and National Institute of Public Health,
  • Krško Nuclear Power Plant,
  • Municipality of Krško,
  • Slovenian Nuclear Safety Administration,
  • Administration for Food Safety, Veterinary Sector and Plant Protection,
  • Slovenian Radiation Protection Administration,
  • Administration for Civil Protection and Disaster Relief and
  • Institute for Occupational Safety.

On the basis of the conclusions and findings a thorough analysis will be prepared with suggestions for improving the national system of preparedness and response to nuclear and radiological emergencies. The cooperation of so many relevant organizations, their experts and decision-makers, as well as the execution of the exercise at such a high level, strengthen Slovenia's reputation also in the international community, which provides guidelines with which we ensure safety and an effective response to such emergencies at the international level.
