Tarleton sweeps home-opening match against Cowley College for first win of 2023

STEPHENVILLE, Texas - Cowley College put up a fight, but in the end, Tarleton was just better.
The Texans swept the Lady Tigers 7-0 for their first win of the season in their home-opening match in Stephenville on Saturday. Tarleton improved to 1-2 overall with the landslide victory, while Cowley College dropped to 0-1.
The 10 a.m. match started a bit cold for the fans and a bit cold for the Texans, who fell behind early in the doubles matches against the fifth-place finishing Lady Tigers in the NJCAA Division I National Championships a season ago. It didn't last, however, with Tarleton taking all three doubles matches in the end, first by and at No. 3 6-3 over Camila Neyra and Mariia Koroleva. and defeated Isid Hernandez and Alexandra Melnikova 6-4 in the top flight. and had a come-from-behind 7-5 victory at No. 2 against Ntokozo Zungu and Arina Babenko.
Nearly all of the singles matches were battles as well, proving the Tigers will be a force to be reckoned with at the junior college level again this season. The only "easy" win for the Texans went to none-other-than Vaudiau, who extended her singles match winning streak to 21 straight, dating back to last season. The senior beat Koroleva 6-4 6-0 at No. 4.
Makantasi had the other straight-sets win in the first flight, beating Babenko 7-5 7-6(2).
Persson rebounded from a tough first set to a cruise over her next two, defeating Hernandez 4-6 6-2 6-1 at No. 2. Boisson then beat Melnikova 7-6(4) 6-7(5) 6-2 at No. 3.

made her home debut in the No. 6 singles flight with a 6-7(5) 6-2 6-4 win over Neyra. Morales completed the sweep in the No. 5 slot with a 6-2 6-7(2) 6-4 win over Zungu.
Tarleton was actually scheduled to open their home campaign with a doubleheader on Saturday, but Weatherford College was forced to postpone the afternoon match last minute to March 3 at 4 p.m. CT in Stephenville.
That day will actually be the next time Tarleton plays at home. The Texans' nearly five-week span of road matches begins Friday at Oral Roberts in Tulsa, Oklahoma, at the Bernis Duke Center at 3 p.m. CT.
