Mayor Johnson, Tanzanian Minister Kijaji sign letter of intent to cooperate on major shared goals

DALLAS - Mayor Eric Johnson and Dr. Ashatu Kachwamba Kijaji, Minister for Investment, Industry and Trade for the United Republic of Tanzania, signed a letter of intent Tuesday agreeing to work toward specific goals that would expand commerce, tourism, and cultural ties in their respective jurisdictions.

The letter, signed at the conclusion of a meeting Tuesday in the Dallas City Hall Flag Room, calls for both sides to develop a work plan on the following objectives:

  • Establishing a physical trade office in Dallas to promote trade with Eastern and Southern African countries.
  • Establishing a formal agreement to promote tourism and cultural exchanges between Dallas and Tanzania.
  • Engaging Dallas Fort Worth International Airport and relevant airlines to establish direct cargo and passenger routes between Dallas and Tanzania.
  • Collaborating on a future trade mission led by Mayor Johnson to Tanzania during his tenure in office.

A copy of the letter can be downloaded here.

Prior to the letter signing ceremony, Mayor Johnson met with a delegation led by Kijaji and Dr. Elsie Kanza, the Tanzanian Ambassador to the United States. Representatives from the United States Department of Commerce, Dallas Fort Worth International Airport, the Dallas Regional Chamber, and VisitDallas also participated in the meeting.

"We are having these talks and this meeting at the perfect time," Mayor Johnson said during the meeting. "I am proud to say that Dallas is the place to be right now."

"We look forward to further enhancing trade and cultural exchanges between Tanzania and Dallas," Mayor Johnson added. "And I believe that by working together, we can boost investment in important business sectors, such as technology, agriculture, healthcare, and manufacturing."

Mayor Johnson previously met with Ambassador Kanza in December, kicking off diplomatic discussions between Tanzania and Dallas. The United States and the United Republic of Tanzania are celebrating more than 60 years of diplomatic cooperation.
