Deputy Minister Boitumelo Moloi opens two Employment Centres in Johannesburg and Germiston

The Department of Employment and Labour Deputy Minister, Ms Boitumelo Moloi, has appealed to the community of Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg to jealously safeguard their newly operative and resourceful Employment Centres from criminal activities.

Ms Moloi was today (07 July 2023) speaking during the official opening of the two Employment Centres at the Department of Employment and Labour's Johannesburg Labour Centre.

"My biggest appeal to the Community of Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg is that; let us all look after these centres and mobile units. Let us guard them jealously from criminal elements that may want to strip them. Let us look after them for the sake of our work seekers and the future of Gauteng.

"Young people in our communities need to be constantly engaged, to prevent them from falling prey to substance abuse, which end up impacting negatively on the user, their families and communities. The Employment Centres and our Mobile Units can be used to run education and awareness programs, and also to create an access point for life skills training," said Deputy Minister Moloi.

The official opening of the two Employment Centres comes after yesterday's (06 July 2023) official launch of the 14 Public Employment Services mobile buses by the Department of Employment and Labour at NASREC.

"We are not under any illusion that the two Centres that we are launching today, are going to solve all Ekurhuleni and Johannesburg's unemployment and poverty problems. Other players within government and the private sector need to hold our hands and come forward in addressing aspects such as improving education and skills development.

"We are hoping that we can use the Employment Centres and our mobile Units, as an Active Labour Market intervention, to bring greater collaboration with employers and training authorities in the Gauteng Region," said the Deputy Minister.

The Johannesburg Labour Centre, where the Employment Centre is located, is at the heart of Johannesburg, and where it would provide easy access to many work-seekers who utilise public transport. In addition, the Employment Centre is closer to public and private universities within the vicinity. The Community of Johannesburg's unemployment rate is currently recorded at 32.7 percent against the province's figure of 34.3 percent.

The Germiston Labour Centre is on the other hand located in the City of Ekurhuleni, where the unemployment rate is currently at 33.4 percent against the overall provincial unemployment stats. The Employment Centre there is closer to a number of private and public colleges and other training service providers. Moreover, the Employment Centre would be able to provide the much-needed services to work-seekers in the broader Germiston, Boksburg, Benoni, Kempton Park, Katlehong, Tembisa communities etc.
