Congresswoman Barbara Lee Issues Statement on U.S. election to serve on the UN Human Rights Council

Washington, D.C. -- Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-13) released a statement following the election of the United States to the UN Human Rights Council (HRC):

"Beginning in January, the United States will regain our voice and vote at the UN Human Rights Council. By regaining a seat at the table, where the world's most pressing human rights needs are discussed, the United States will once again play its traditional, leadership role in ensuring the Council serves its purpose in holding countries accountable and supporting the global fight against injustice.

"Our absence from the UN Human Rights Council over the last three years has only served to embolden human rights offenders while denying vulnerable populations around the world one of their loudest and strongest defenders. Rejoining the council gives us a renewed opportunity both to defend human rights and advocate for internal changes that could make the council a more effective tool for protecting vulnerable people.

"As Chair of the House Appropriations Subcommittee on State and Foreign Operations, I applaud the Biden Administration for prioritizing human rights and international engagement. I look forward to working with Ambassador Linda Thomas-Greenfield and the entire Biden Administration to ensure the United States prioritizes the many urgent human rights needs around the world and continues to promote fundamental freedoms, the rule of law, and dignity for all."
