ERA Revises Renewable Energy Feed-in-Tariffs

The Electricity Regulatory Authority (ERA) has under Section 10 (qa) and 75 (1) of the Electricity Act, prescribed the Standardized Feed-in Tariffs for Renewable Energy Systems generating up to a maximum capacity of 50 MW in Uganda, effective 12^th January, 2024.

The new Tariffs under the REFiT Phase VI Guidelines follow the review of the REFIT Phase V Guidelines; and are applicable to Hydropower, Bagasse, Biogas, Landfill Gas, Waste-to-energy/Biomass, Solar PV, Wind Power, and Geothermal Technologies of Power Generation.

Initially, the REFiT Guidelines covered Renewable Energy technologies not exceeding 20 MW. However, with the enactment of the Electricity Amendment Act, 2022, the capacity covered under the REFiT Guidelines was revised upwards to 50 MW.

The Renewable Energy Feed-in Tariffs, effective 12^th January, 2024

The REFIT aims to encourage and support the participation of Private Sector players in Power Generation from Renewable Energy Technologies, through the establishment of an Appropriate Regulatory Framework, in line with the Revised Renewable Energy Policy for Uganda, 2023.

The REFiT is continuously reviewed and updated by the Authority in line with changes in market conditions including Laws, Policies, Technologies, Prices of inputs for Energy production, and Cost of capital, among others.

The review of the REFiT is done in consultation with key stakeholders, including Project Developers, Financiers, Government, Development Partners, and Non-Government Organizations. The revised Renewable Energy Feed-in-Tariffs shall be used for the next Two (2) years and cease to be in force on 5^th January, 2026.
