Simi Valley Police Department to Host Community Meeting to Discuss Military Equipment

The Simi Valley Police Department is hosting a community meeting on Wednesday, May 1, 2024 at 5:30 p.m. to review its annual report on the use of military equipment as defined and required by Government Code 7072, more commonly known as AB 481, and to answer questions regarding the related policy.

AB 481, signed by Governor Gavin Newsom on September 30, 2021, required law enforcement agencies across the state to adopt a Military Equipment Use Policy and implement it by ordinance and report on its use annually. The Police Department's Military Equipment Use Policy was approved by the City Council and codified into law by adopting ordinance 1342 on June 13, 2022.

Military equipment, as defined by AB 481, is broken down into 15 categories, including firearms and ammunition, battering rams, Tasers, pepper spray, and other equipment commonly used by law enforcement agencies across the country to enhance community and officer safety.

The Military Equipment Annual Report Community Meeting will be held in the Emergency Operations Center of the Simi Valley Police Department located at 3901 Alamo Street. For more information about this community meeting, please contact Sergeant Travis Coffey at (805) 583-6207 or [email protected].
