NDP Statement on National Indigenous History Month

NDP Statement on National Indigenous History Month

Leader of Canada's NDP, Jagmeet Singh, issued the following statement:

"This National Indigenous History Month, we recognize and celebrate the diverse heritage and history of the First Nations, Inuit and Métis. Indigenous peoples have called this land home for thousands of years. Canadians must take this opportunity to celebrate, learn and acknowledge the contributions of Indigenous peoples who were the First People to this land and have spent centuries providing stewardship and care.

To commemorate Indigenous histories, languages, and identities, we must acknowledge the courage and strength of First Nations, Inuit and Métis peoples who have fought to preserve their cultures in the face of colonialism and genocide.

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission and the National Inquiry into Missing and Murdered Indigenous Women and Girls have helped Canadians understand the history and ongoing impacts of systemic racism that Survivors and their families live with today. Indigenous peoples have laid a path forward to address the inequalities and catastrophic rates of violence against Indigenous women, girls and 2SLGBTQI+ people. All the Calls to Justice and the Calls to Action need to be implemented without delay to save lives and help Indigenous peoples heal.

New Democrats call on all Canadians to be part of reconciliation - this can start with by learning about Indigenous languages, history and culture. Together we can build a country where Indigenous histories and cultures are preserved and honoured so that current and future generations have the opportunity to thrive."
