Ahead of the 75th running of BetVictor Hungerford Stakes we've taken a look back at some of our favourite performances in the storied race from years gone by
Salse - 1988
Trained by the late Sir Henry Cecil, Salse's racing career lasted just two years consisting of nine runs.
The son of Topsider was unbeaten as a two-year-old and never finished outside the top two in all career starts.
Having won the Group 3 Federation Brewery' Beeswing Stakes at Newcastle in July 1988, he backed up that success the following month when landing the then Group 3 Hungerford Stakes at Newbury.
Sent off 9/4 favourite, Salse held off a challenge from Always Fair to cross the finish line ¾ length in front under Steve Cauthen.
He landed further Group 3 glory just a matter of weeks later in the Kiveton Park Stakes at Doncaster before stepping up to Group 1 company for the first time. Having been beaten five lengths to finish runner up in the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot, Salse bounced back to win the Group 2 Bisquit Cognac Challenge Stakes before finishing his career with success at the highest level in the Group 1 Prix De La Foret.
Salse retired at the end of his three-year-old career as a Group 1 winner.
Notable progeny include Classic Cliche who won both the Ascot Gold Cup and the St Leger for Godolphin, Luso, the multiple Group 1 winner who amassed prize money of £1,693,891 and Air Express who went one place better than his sire managed and won the Group 1 Queen Elizabeth II Stakes at Ascot.
