New York CPAs Elect First Latina President of State Society
NEW YORK - (June 15, 2020) - Lynne M. Fuentes, CPA, CGMA, managing partner of Fuentes & Angel, CPAs, LLC began her one-year term as president of the New York State Society of CPAs (NYSSCPA) on June 1, making her the 103rd president of the NYSSCPA, and the first Latina to be elected to the position.
"Becoming an accountant can change the trajectory of a family," says Fuentes.
Fuentes plans to spend her tenure working with the Society's Moynihan Scholarship Fund to build the pipeline through elementary school-age students and above by encouraging them to go into accounting, teaching students statewide about financial literacy, supporting small practitioners, and providing an opportunity for NYSSCPA members to network in social settings.
Fuentes continued, "We are all capable of leading and being great, if we are not underestimated!"
Prior to her presidency, Fuentes served on the NYSSCPA's Board as a vice president and as a director as chapter representative. She also served on the Moynihan Scholarship Fund Board of Trustees and as the chair of the Selections Subcommittee.
Over her 23-year career, Fuentes has provided expert accounting, tax planning and business development services to various industries, including consulting, law firms, online and internet-based retail stores, limited-service restaurants, medical practices, construction, electrical contractors (both union and nonunion shops), transportation and wholesale outlets. She also specializes in tax and estate planning for high-net-worth individuals.
Before forming Fuentes & Angel, CPAs, LLC, she had her own practice; Fuentes had begun building it as a student in college. Before going out on her own in 2010, she worked at a mid-sized national firm; there, she managed the tax department and was responsible for overseeing and mentoring junior and senior accountants, as well as tax preparation and planning for businesses and individuals.
Fuentes joined the NYSSCPA in 2004 and is a member of the Nassau Chapter, where she served as president, president-elect, secretary and treasurer. She earned her B.B.A. in accounting from Hofstra University. Fuentes frequently volunteers at her alma mater, Holy Trinity High School, for their annual career night, providing the students with information and guidance on careers in accounting.
