This Sunday, October 22, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador will head the Meeting for a Fraternal Neighborhood with Wellbeing (Encuentro por una Vecindad Fraternal y con Bienestar) in Palenque, Chiapas, together with leaders and delegation heads from Belize, Colombia, Costa Rica, Cuba, Ecuador, El Salvador, Guatemala, Haiti, Honduras, Panama and Venezuela, for a high-level discussion about comprehensive and structural solutions to the situation of massive human mobility being experienced in the region.
To date, the heads of state of Colombia, Cuba, Haiti, Honduras and Venezuela have confirmed their participation, as have the vice president of El Salvador and the deputy prime minister of Belize, and ministers and foreign ministers from the other countries.
During the meeting, they will analyze the causes of human mobility, such as poverty, inequality, lack of job opportunities and the negative effects of climate change, as well as external unilateral measures that drive this social issue amongst vulnerable groups.
The leaders and senior representatives of the 12 countries in the region will explore coordinated actions to expand safe, orderly and regular pathways for human and labor mobility, with a humanistic vision and a focus on development, cooperation and humane management.
