April is Sexually Transmitted Infections (STIs) Month

Linn County has seen an increase in many common sexually transmitted infections (STIs) over the past several years, including gonorrhea, chlamydia, and syphilis.

As the month of April marks STI Awareness Month, Linn County Public Health wants residents to know one simple sentiment - 'If You Use It, Test It.' This slogan refers to the idea that individuals who are sexually active should get body parts used during sexual activity tested for STIs. Since there is not one test for all STIs, individuals may need to have multiple tests done to get a complete STI test result. Areas that may be tested for STIs include an individual's blood, urine, throat, genital area, or rectal area.

No matter what type of STI testing is done, just know it is usually pain-free, quick, and easy. STI testing can be completed at your healthcare provider's office, Linn County Public Health, or at home with an at-home test kit from Linn County Public Health or these select local pharmacies:

  • CR Care Pharmacy: 3100 E Ave. NE Cedar Rapids, IA 52405
  • Reutzel Pharmacy: 317 8th Ave. SE Cedar Rapids, IA 52401
  • Mount Vernon Pharmacy: 101 1st St. NE Mount Vernon, IA 52314
  • Central City Family Pharmacy: 402 E. Main St. Central City, IA 52214
  • Center Point Family Pharmacy: 900 Bank Ct. Center Point, IA 52213
  • Atkins Family Pharmacy: 401 Cardinal Ave. Atkins, IA 52206

  • Nightengale Drug: 303 W. Main St. Anamosa, IA 52205
  • NuCara Pharmacy: 500 2nd St. Traer, IA 50675

With the most common STI symptom being no symptoms at all, it is very important to get tested for STIs if you are sexually active.

Linn County Public Health wants individuals who may be nervous or overwhelmed about STI testing to know that it is OK to have those feelings. Your healthcare provider is there for you to ensure your best health, so feel empowered to have those types of conversations the next time you visit your provider's office.

Just as it's important to openly talk to your healthcare provider about STI testing and treatment, don't forget to also have those conversations with your sexual partner. It's important to have those conversations, too, so everyone can know their status and the best options for keeping everyone happy and healthy.
