Enhancing User Experience in DOE's R&D Results Database

04/16/2024

DOE OSTI is excited to announce a user-focused redesign of the information included on OSTI.GOV record pages. OSTI.GOV is DOE's comprehensive collection of R&D results from 1947 to the present. When users complete a search and select a record in OSTI.GOV, they now see a reorganized, streamlined view of relevant information describing that specific research output. This update includes more centralized metadata and an improved menu for easier navigation and quicker discovery.

Key metadata, including title, authors, DOI, and date, have all been placed prominently at the top of the page for easy access.

Additionally, this update relocates the availability options on the record page. Information about how to access the output, including full-text download buttons, software request information, and embargo dates, are easy to see directly below the record abstract. At the right-center of the page, users will find Cite, Export, Share, and Save drop-down menus, along with the Print icon.

The records continue to include reference lists, cited-by information, linked research, related figures and tables, similar records, and subject categories, available in separate sections, and makes them easier to explore. This content is displayed on the main page, in a scrolling format, and is viewable with fewer mouse clicks. An anchored, or "sticky," menu simplifies navigation. Now, as users scroll, the sticky menu remains visible at the top of the page. These sections are also searchable and sortable individually, allowing for greater flexibility and visibility within the record content.

The Linked Research section links to other research objects (e.g., journal articles, technical reports, datasets, etc.), offering a fuller picture of how research objects are related or connect to one another.
