Kildee Announces New AmeriCorps Deployment to Help Build Housing for Homeless Veterans in Genesee County

WASHINGTON-During AmeriCorps Week, Congressman Dan Kildee (MI-08) announced today a new AmeriCorps' deployment in Genesee County to expand access to housing for homeless veterans.

Members of AmeriCorps' National Civilian Community Corps (NCCC) will be working with the United Way of Genesee County and My Brothers Keeper of Genesee County to renovate a 10-bed housing unit for homeless veterans in Flint, as well as helping to build gardens and trails at the new housing unit.

"I am pleased to welcome AmeriCorps members to Genesee County to help ensure housing for veterans," said Congressman Kildee. "Our men and women in uniform who defend our freedoms represent the best of this country, and we owe them our full support when they return home."

"Annually more than 300 AmeriCorps Members volunteer to support dozens of Genesee County based projects," said Jamie Gaskin, CEO of United Way of Genesee County. "This project supporting veterans around housing is a great example of this work addressing some of our most challenging issues. This housing project with My Brothers Keeper is both a pathway for Americans to volunteer and provides a hand up to veterans in our community."

Congressman Kildee has long championed efforts to expand access to housing for veterans. Through his Fiscal Year 2024 Community Project Initiative, he secured $4.5 million for projects to build new housing and make critical home repairs for mid-Michigan veterans. Additionally, in 2021, Congressman Kildee helped secure a historic $1 billion investment in AmeriCorps to help expand their work in mid-Michigan, and across the country.
