HONOLULU - The City and County of Honolulu's Department of Environmental Services (ENV) is partnering with the Honolulu Theatre of Youth (HTY) to present "Opala Remix" at elementary schools across O'ahu the next several weeks.
The 55-minute live musical performance workshop of Opala Remix is presented by a small group of HTY artists. In this entertaining mash-up of interactive song, dance, and theater, students will learn the dos and don'ts of recycling, the ins and outs of the 3-cart collection system, and will be encouraged to help their friends and family learn about waste on O'ahu.
The shows will reach more than 6,500 students from kindergarten through sixth grade. ENV's educational books, including the "Where do things go?" coloring book, The Opala IQ Book, and the "Recycling and Disposal Guide for O'ahu" will be distributed as part of the show.
The WHERE DO THINGS GO? Coloring Activity Book is based on the HTY story about Kevin who learns to sort trash into the carts and is rewarded for his efforts with recycled gifts. (K-3).
The OPALA IQ BOOK teaches families how to become more opala akamai. The book includes a word finder and crossword puzzle, while guiding the reader through the concepts about reducing waste to landfills and how we benefit from recycling and waste-to-energy. (5th grade up).
The RECYCLING AND DISPOSAL GUIDE for O'ahu provides valuable information on recycling and waste services provided by the City and County of Honolulu. (5th grade up).
HTY scheduled 20 performances in public elementary schools. The play is free to the schools and is aligned with the current priorities of solid waste and recycling within ENV. The shows began Monday, January 30, and run through Thursday, February 16.
