Sacramento County Recognizes Meth Awareness Day

As part of the effort to tackle the serious issue of methamphetamine use, Sacramento County Health Services is recognizing Meth Awareness Day today, November 30, 2023.

Methamphetamine Awareness Day aims to increase education and awareness about the dangers of meth use or addiction. This day is a strong reminder, echoing both national and local efforts to lend a hand to those dealing with the deep impact of this substance.

Methamphetamine, a highly addictive drug, inflicts damage on multiple vital organs within the human body. The harsh reality is underscored by a somber statistic: in 2022 alone, Sacramento County mourned the loss of 280 lives due to meth intoxication. In response to this crisis, the Sacramento Methamphetamine Coalition is dedicated to preventing meth use and addiction through increasing awareness, expanding treatment access, enhancing public education, and more. This coalition, a collaboration of healthcare professionals, community champions, law enforcement, county agencies, and concerned citizens, envisions a future where collective efforts catalyze positive change and save lives.

The Let's Talk Meth campaign launched in November 2020 and the recently launched Safer Sacramento in 2023, aim not only to decrease meth use but also to enhance enrollment in substance use prevention and treatment programs. These campaigns, coupled with dedicated websites, serve as lifelines for those currently grappling with meth use or addiction, forging connections to vital resources and endeavoring to dismantle the stigma surrounding this complex issue.

Stories of lived experience are incredibly impactful and moving when educating the community about the harmful nature of substance use disorder. If you or a loved one are interested in sharing your story, it can be submitted confidentially to [email protected]. Your story holds the potential to be a catalyst for change and enlightenment within our community.
