PHILADELPHIA - Community College of Philadelphia will celebrate the birthday and legacy of Octavius V. Catto and the accomplishments of students from the Catto Scholarship on Wednesday, Feb. 22, Octavius V. Catto's birthday, in an event for the College community. The event including a short program, where Catto Scholars will share their experiences at the College, will begin at 11 a.m.

The Catto Scholarship provides free college to eligible students to earn a degree without debt at the College. In addition to last-dollar funding to cover the cost of tuition, Catto Scholars also receive funding to cover the cost of books, enhanced academic success and career coaching, academic advising, and connections to resources like housing assistance and child care.

This initiative, supported by the City of Philadelphia, is aimed at helping to stop the cycle of poverty, and remove financial and other barriers that prevent students from starting college or completing their degree.

"The Catto Scholarship not only provides financial assistance, but a framework that delivers the support and guidance of a team dedicated to their success. This community of learners is prepared to meet their goals and keep moving forward after earning an associate degree, benefitting them, their families and Philadelphia," said Dr. Donald Guy Generals, president of Community College of Philadelphia.

Octavius V. Catto was an educator and voting rights activist who was killed on Election Day in Philadelphia in 1871.
