Library Celebrates Local Authors December 10

Enjoy an opportunity to meet over a dozen area authors representing a variety of genres at the Greensboro Public Library's Local Author Celebration starting at 1:30 pm, Saturday, December 10 at Central Library, 219 N. Church St. In addition to meeting the authors, guests can attend free workshops designed to help aspiring writers. There will also be hot cider and book signings with the authors.

The first workshop is Jumpstart Your Writing Practice with Quinn Dalton from 1:30-2:30 pm.
Dalton will share a quick start to good habits for your writing practice including prompts, helpful resources, and next steps to get you on your way.

Crafting Your Elevator Speech: Selling Your Book in Three Minutes or Less with Beth Sheffield is the second workshop from 3-3:45 pm. Only have a few minutes to give your pitch? Learn some effective dramatic narrative tools to sell yourself, your book, your idea, or your organization.

Authors scheduled to attend the Local Author Celebration include:

Angela Parks - A Christmas Miracle
Angela Parks is founder and Program Director of Y.E.S. WE CAN, INC. and newly established Y.E.S. WE CAN CONSULTING, L.L.C. She is the author of six books, which includes a volume of poetry.

Annette Pearson - Going Deeper
Pearson is an inspirational writer, wife, mother, and grandmother. She works at Covenant Church of Asheboro and is a retired paralegal.

Diya Abdo - American Refuge: True Stories of the Refugee Experience
Abdo is a Professor of English in the Department of English and Creative Writing at Guilford College. She is also the founder of "Every Campus A Refuge" which works with refugee families on college and university campuses to assist in their resettlement.

Edward Di Gangi - The Best Gift Given
Di Gangi's memoir shares his search for lost family that suddenly compels him to embark on a genealogical quest to discover his origins. As he digs deeper, he begins to piece together the life story of an extraordinary woman-his birth mother.

Haven Turner - Untitled: You & Me
Turner is the author of a children's picture book. She is also a life coach and self-help author.

Jennifer Orth-Veilon - Beyond Their Limits of Longing
From the vast scenes on the battlefield to the fight at the home front, World War I writing and scholarship in this collection allows us, through contemporary perspectives, to inhabit the mind and body of individual soldiers, doctors, nurses, civilians, and families. Jennifer A. Orth-Veillon, PhD, is a French-American writer, educator, and translator.

Lakisha Tucker - The Adventures of Kiran and Kovu
Lakisha Tucker has written three children's books. She says it's important for kids to see themselves in the stories.

Lee Zacharias - What a Wonderful World This Could Be
Zacharias, author of five novels and two collections, has received fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts and the North Carolina Arts Council. She is also a two-time recipient of North Carolina's Sir Walter Raleigh Award.

M.C. Armstrong - American Delphi
In this young adult novel, teenager Zora discovers the true history of her family, her life begins to change, and so do the paths of everyone around her, including a community of activists in her town. M.C. Armstrong teaches writing at UNCG and is the guitarist and lead singer-songwriter for Viva la Muerte, an original rock and roll band.

Michael Gaspeny - A Postcard from the Delta
Fueled by the Blues, football, and guilt, Gaspeny's novel is about a white small-town hero whose future explodes when he falls for an African-American girl, the daughter of his mentor. Gaspeny is the author of two poetry chapbooks. He has won the Randall Jarrell Poetry Prize and the O. Henry Festival Short Story Competition.

Quinn Dalton - Midnight Bowling
Dalton is the author of two novels and two story collections. She has an MFA in Writing and Masters of Education from UNCG. She has taught workshops throughout the Southeast.

Sam Harrison - Reflections on the Black Experience in America
Harrison is CEO at Sam Harrison and Associates. He has extensive management and technical experience in industry and academia.

Sandra Bartell - Money Does Grow on Trees
Bartell is a retired educator and she's been sharing the power of information for over 30 years. She realized schools don't teach how to invest and save and has published two children's books on the subject.

Sharice Adams - Crossroads: Destiny vs. Destruction
Sharice Adams and Shala Brown posthumously published this book by Sharice's brother, Pastor Sheldon Lee Brown.

Victoria Sparks - Plan to Prevail: A Resource Guide for College Bound Students
Prior to graduating from high school, Sparks was awarded nearly $500,000 in scholarships to pursue higher education and is now showing others how to do the same. Her book is a guide designed to aid students in college preparation, application, and the financial aid process.

Virginia Summey - The Life of Elreta Melton Alexander
Summey is a historian of the US South and Faculty Fellow in Lloyd International Honors College at the UNCG. Her research and areas of expertise include North Carolina history, political and legal history, African American history, and Women's history.
