National Small Business Week: Policies Matter and Small Businesses are Not Getting “What They Need”

Washington, D.C. - This week (April 28-May 4) has been declared "National Small Business Week" by the U.S. Small Business Administration (SBA). The week acknowledges "the critical contributions of America's entrepreneurs and small business owners," according to the SBA. Small Business & Entrepreneurship Council (SBE Council) president & CEO Karen Kerrigan issued the following statement on National Small Business Week 2024:

"We salute and celebrate the millions of entrepreneurs, small business owners and their employees who work hard every day to achieve their dreams. These entrepreneurs and small businesses are the engines of local economies - supporting jobs, innovative choices, economic growth, non-profit organizations and youth sports leagues, local government services through tax revenues and much more. That is why SBE Council celebrates entrepreneurs every day, and our elected leaders and government officials must do the same through friendly and supportive policies."

"In President Biden's National Small Business Week 2024 proclamation about the importance of this week and small businesses, he wrote: 'Getting them what they need to grow is one of the best investments our country can make.' SBE Council agrees, which is why tax and regulatory policies need to support an ecosystem that provides entrepreneurs and their workers with the flexibility and freedom to innovate, and to work efficiently and effectively so that they can compete with larger businesses and in the global marketplace. Such an ecosystem would encourage capital formation and access, robust investment, competitive choices with respect to business inputs, affordable health coverage, stable costs and low inflation."

"Unfortunately, what is happening on the policy front diverges wildly from what small businesses need. Indeed, we have seen a record level of new regulation advanced by the Biden Administration. Just today, for example, at the launch of National Small Business Week, the Administration released a final rule on Association Health Plans that prohibits small businesses from joining together to offer more affordable health care for their employees."

(See SBE Council's new Small Business Insider blog post about the tidal wave of other costly rulemakings here.)

"The regulatory rampage is only one facet of President Biden's agenda that has been harmful to entrepreneurs and small businesses. He supports raising their taxes as well. If small businesses are to survive and thrive, they need much less intrusive government than what they are getting under President Biden. This week, we look forward to working with our small business members, friends in Congress and in the business community to press forward on highlighting the sound policies that support small business growth and success. That means we will also continue to push back on harmful policies being advanced by the Administration and we will not give up on educating White House and regulatory agency officials about the intended and unintended consequences of their actions on small business America."
