OneFifty Acquires Latin American Documentary PRIMERA For HBO Max

OneFifty has acquired the Latin American documentary film PRIMERA, set to premiere on HBO Max on Sunday, September 4. The film is directed and produced by Vee Bravo, with New York-based filmmakers Kevin Lopez and Catherine Gund serving as producers.

PRIMERA documents the 2019-20 social uprising in Chile that saw millions of people take to the streets to demand a new constitution-written by everyday people-that guarantees dignified healthcare, education, and pensions for all. The film offers an immersive look at the year-long process through the experiences of working-class parents who push the government to hold a national plebiscite, in spite of violent police repression and the looming threat of Covid-19. The HBO MAX premiere on September 4, 2022 will coincide with the date Chileans will vote on the new constitution.

"As someone who was displaced by Chile's violent dictatorship during the 80s, I could not sit by the sidelines and watch my people suffer. Initially, when the student protests began, my goal was to cover the atrocities committed by the military. I never thought this would turn into a revolution, much less a film. I'm glad I stayed the course and told the story. We're thrilled that HBO Max will now help get it to the rest of the world."

"We were an early supporter of the film, prior to its theatrical release," said Axel Caballero, VP of Artistic and Cultural Innovations & Head of OneFifty. "It is an honor to continue to share this powerful story of everyday Chileans wanting to see a change in government and who became leaders in the movement."

PRIMERA received an artist grant from OneFifty, which supported the development of Primera in its early stages, as well as strategic marketing and promotions to amplify the 2021 run in theaters. The deal was negotiated by Leslie Cohen, Senior Vice President of Acquisitions for HBO Max.
