WaterNSW monitoring Warragamba spill as inflows rise

27 November 2021

WaterNSW is monitoring inflows into Warragamba Dam following confirmation that Sydney's major supply storage started spilling shortly after 9pm last night (Friday, 26 November).

Preliminary estimates are that the spillway outflow could peak at a rate of approximately 60-80 gigalitres per day (GL/day), only a fraction of the March spill event that peaked at 500GL/day.

Inflows to the dam storage are rising due to multiple recent rain events, with the current rate of >38 GL/day expected to increase and showers to persist.

On current projections the spill could continue for up to a week.

Downstream impacts are likely and will be determined by the spill volume combined with downstream tributary flows.

WaterNSW is working closely with the Bureau of Meteorology and the NSW State Emergency Service to monitor weather and inflows.
