Mayor Kevin Coleman and Westland City Council Recognize April as Autism Awareness Month

Westland, MI- Mayor Kevin Coleman and Council President Pro-Tem Melissa Sampey invite you to join them in recognizing Autism Awareness Month this April. Together, we want to foster an environment of inclusion and togetherness for people in and outside of our community with Autism.

We will be hosting an Autism Awareness Month Walk on April 28 at Westland City Hall. Doors will open at 12:30 p.m., with the walk around City Hall property to begin at 1 p.m. City Hall will also be illuminated at night with the color blue, a color of calmness and acceptance, to heighten awareness throughout the month.

According to Autism Speaks, 1 out of 36 children and 1 out of 45 adults are affected by Autism in the United States. It can be reliably diagnosed at the age of 2, however it usually is diagnosed between the ages of 4 and 5. To learn more about Autism statistics in our country, click here.

"As an Autism sibling and advocate, it is truly an honor to be part of recognizing individuals with special needs," said Council President Pro-Tem Sampey. "I appreciate the Mayor and City's willingness to bring awareness and acceptance to Autism, a condition that affects so many."

"I am looking forward to working with Council President Pro-Tem Sampey in order to bring awareness to Autism this April," stated Mayor Coleman. "As Mayor, it is important to me that we create a culture of acceptance for all residents within the City of Westland."
