Dr. Katie A. Chargualaf has been named dean of the School of Nursing at the University of South Carolina Aiken, effective July 1. Chargualaf has been with the School of Nursing since January 2018 and currently serves as interim dean.

Chargualaf's academic career began in 2008 at Marymount University in Arlington, Virginia. She also served at the National American University in Albuquerque, New Mexico, and the University of the Incarnate Word in San Antonio, Texas.

While teaching at the University of Incarnate Word, she was instrumental in developing and maintaining an Academic-Practice Partnership between the university and a local transplant hospital. Her research has focused on improving results in transplant patients and, more recently, on facilitating veteran learning in BSN programs and transitioning from military to civilian nursing practice.

Chargualaf has an impressive research and publication record and has presented her research at numerous regional, national, and international conferences. She has earned many awards for her teaching and scholarship.

In 2022, Chargualaf was inducted as a Fellow in the American Academy of Nursing (FAAN), one of the nation's more prestigious honors in nursing, recognizing the accomplishments of nursing leaders in education management, practice, and research.

Chargualaf started her nursing career after graduating from a diploma program at Bon Secours Memorial School of Nursing (now College of Nursing) in Richmond, Virginia. She earned her bachelor's in nursing from South Dakota State University, her master's in nursing from the University of Phoenix, and her doctorate in nursing from the University of Hawaii at MaƱoa.
