USACE Omaha District receives distinguished honors at national awards ceremonies

The U.S. Army Corps of Engineers Headquarters hosted the 2021 National Awards Ceremony on Nov. 10 and the Small Business Awards ceremony on Nov. 17. During both of virtual events, the Omaha District received distinguished honors and was recognized alongside colleagues from across the organization by Lt. Gen. Scott A. Spellman, 55th Chief of Engineers and Commanding General.

During the 2021 National Awards Ceremony USACE HQ selected James M. Pakiz, Omaha District's Deputy District Counsel, as recipient of the George Wolfe Koonce award.

"James consistently performs at the highest level within the Corps' legal services community, selflessly takes on new challenges that enables the Omaha District to perform the nation's work on many challenging projects, " Thomas Tracy, Chief District Counsel, Omaha District, said.

Stacy Birkel, Assistant District Counsel also received the 2021 Enterprise Award for outstanding contributions by a legal team. These annual awards recognize Corps attorneys for their legal achievement and professional performance.

The Omaha District happens to be the home base of the USACE 2021 Herbert A. Kassner Communicator of the Year Award winner for the fifth consecutive year, Mike Glasch, Deputy Director of Public Affairs. These national competitions have hundreds of individuals around 44 USACE Divisions and Districts competing in 31 categories ranging from broadcast, radio, print and photography. The awards recognize individuals for excellence in the Army public affairs community for cultivating, and inspiring excellence in the field.

"What excites me about the public affairs field? I have the privilege of being able to share the stories of everyone who helps make the Corps great. I get to showcase their work, their dedication, their commitment, and their excellence. I get to tell a story that might otherwise never be told," Glasch said.

At the USACE national Small Business virtual awards ceremony on Nov. 17, the Omaha District was recognized in three categories for their fiscal year 2021 program by Lieutenant General Spellman. Enterprise-wide, USACE has over 60 dedicated Small Business Professionals across the divisions, districts, and centers.

Honor categories include second place in the $500M Club, second place as District or Center Overall, second place in the Highest FY21 SB Award by Dollar category, and second place in the District or Center Overall Highest FY21 SDB Award by Dollar category, and Top 10 District of Center for FY21 A service-disabled veteran-owned small business awards by dollar.

"Achieving these awards for the Omaha District, makes me feel like we're doing a good job maximizing opportunities for small businesses and managing the SB Program. This award is a well-deserved recognition to several team members of the District for our continuous efforts in utilizing small businesses in our procurement actions," Daniel Curado, Chief, Small Business, Procurement Analyst, Omaha District, said.

Lastly, to close out the event, the Omaha District was nationally recognized as the recipient of the Small Business Success Story of the Year Award. This honor was given to the Omaha District for its innovative contract award of a seven-year multiple award task order contract for the nationwide Petroleum, Oil and Lubricants Mandatory Center of Expertise. This contract offered small businesses 100% participation in the contract which is valued at $349M.
